How "illegal" would it be to add comprehensive auto insurance a day after hitting a deer, then making a claim?

Question 1
How "illegal" would it be to add comprehensive auto insurance a day after hitting a deer, then making a claim?... I'm now 25 years old and have never had anything close to an accident. So naturally I carry liability only insurance for my automobile. Well 2 nights ago I hit a deer on the way home causing moderate front end damage to the car. How "illegal" would it be if I were to add comprehensive insurance to my policy, then wait a few days and make a claim?

Answers
1) That would be insurance fraud. You may get away with it or maybe not. - pbleek

2) adding that type of coverage usually involves the car being inspected by an agent before it gets accepted, did you think you were the first person who thought of that? as for how illegal it would be?...come onnnn, do I need to explain that to you? - tampabaylive

3) Very illegal.

It is called insurance fraud.

People go to jail all the time for it. - FleetTech

4) Do yourself a favor, and fix it yourself. For what you are about too try to do will not work . Thy will have you bring your car to them ,So thy can check for any dings you may have before thy Insure you. - Larry

5) its called fraud/its indictable and carrys a felony prosecution/usually when you apply for collision you need to get pictures of the car before it becomes insured/comp has nothing to do with collision what your damage will be classified/good thinking to become a criminal wow - ken k

6) Yes it is illegal and is a fraud. When you hit a deer, you need to have the comprehensive coverage in order to claim insurance and should inform your insurance agent or insurance company about the incident. In some cases, the insurance rates could go up after making the claim with the insurance company. So to get the best monetary benefit or claim, you need to know how to handle your insurance claim. - Robin

7) Extremely. Felony insurance fraud. Potentially several years in prison. Less serious than murder. No death penalty. - StephenWeinstein

8) Whatever you added to your insurance would cover from that day forward, not in the past. If you made a claim for an accident during the time you weren't covered, it would be fraudulent. Insurance adjusters are quite good at uncovering fraudulent claims. I wouldn't try it. - oklatom

9) If the damage is moderate, I would suggest making the repairs out of pocket and not even bother with your insurance. Making the claim will more than likely make your insurance rate go up, and stay at that higher rate for 3 years. - Lillian

Question 2
How can you tell if your mechanic is lying to you about a service that needs to be done?...

Answers
1) Get a second opinion from a friends mechanic! - Dv8oR

2) Take the car to another mechanic and get a second opinion. - 67Bronco

3) check your maintenance book/if not get a book on the car at auto parts store - ken k

4) You can't unless you read what it says in your owner's manual. - Otto

5) Well more info would of helped, like whats wrong with the car and what he wants to do to it and get a second opinion. - Scott W

6) I agree with most people about getting a second opinion somewhere else.

But, I do have another suggestion. For example, when a mechanic tells you that your vehicle needs new front and rear shocks, have him show you the problem. When he pushes down on the car and it bounces up and down a few times before returning to it's normal position, he probably isn't lying. He might also show you the premature tire wear resulting from bad shocks.

When I work on my customer's cars and perform a repair, I like to show them the worn out, broken, or damaged part as proof there was actually a problem. The customer is more inclined to believe you from there on.

I hope this helps! - idriveafordranger94

7) Best way to check is to take second opinion from another garage - Robin

Question 3
I was rear ended now what?... My van was rear ended this evening and I do not have insurance. The teenager who was driving the mercedes that hit me didn't want to call the police either, because she was afraid what her parents would say. I agreed and we exchanged name and number. Well just a minuate ago her father called and blamed me for not wanting to call the police. Even though I agreed not to, he's sounding like he does not want to pay for the damages to my van. Calling it a no fault accident. What can I do legally to get my van repaired. The girl did tell me she had liability.
I'd like to add that my insurance was up at the end of October 31!! I was on my way to work to support my family and am in the process of renewing.
I've called the police and they will not make a report because it's now after the fact.

Answers
1) nothing you should have called pd , at least they wernt driving a ford prob , you never want to be rear ended by a prob - beyb1976

2) well first off you are driving ILLEGAL. You are responsible for ALL damages, for both your car and theirs. They have no responsibility to pay for your damages. This is YOUR fault. You are the reason insurance is as high as it is because when people drive without it and get hit and expect someone else to pay. I hope the cops are called and you get fined and your license gets suspended. - hondab16tuner

3) Call the police, you need a police report to file a claim with the other drivers insurance. - pbleek

4) thats what you get for being nice to the non owner/he knows whats going on and away you go/now what/make out police report and go from there - ken k

5) Basically you're shafted. If you call the cops and they do investigate, which is doubtful since both cars have left the scene, you'll be cited for "no insurance" and driving illegally. That will automatically make you at fault and liable for the damages to both cars. Bite the bullet. Fix your van and get some insurance. - mustanger

6) Are you in a State that say you half to have Insurance? If so let it go for you would had too pay a fine yourself for not having Insurance. I really hate to it but you may be out of luck here. - Larry

Thanks
There never was a court date for this at all

Answers
1) You'll be lucky if thats all they do - Derek

2) If you had a court date and you didn't go, they will issue a failure to appear, it's a permanent mark on your record. and usually with an arrest warrent. - littleevilzombiegirl

3) You are at fault. you need to open up communication with whoever is prosecuting you. You need to arrange some kind of deal. They need to understand your financial situation.

If you try and hide from this it will only get worse. You are up against people who are smarter than you are and that are getting paid to resolve this situation. Act like an adult and deal with it in a responsible manner. - joepinapplz

4) of all the stuff you cant afford/insurance is not one of them/now you cant afford lawyer/how long does this go on/lic suspension/dont worry about driving the car will be attached along with any assets you have or may ever have and your pay check also/when the judgements roll in declare bankruptcy/see lawyer now - ken k

5) If you had an accident that was your fault a year ago, why isn't it paid by now? Yes, they can take your license until you do pay. A lawyer won't do you much good, you were driving without insurance and had an at fault accident. Pay for the damage you did. - oklatom

6) Check online to find a website that will provide simple legal counseling without a fee. For any indepth legal advice, you are going to need a lawyer. Check the local phonebook to see if there are legal counselors in your area that work on a sliding-scale basis or who provide counseling to those who can't afford it. The law firm can sue all they want; however, if you don't have money, they won't get much anyway. It could go against your credit. There is also the possibility that they could arrange to have your wages garnished. You definitely need legal advice. - Dark Angel
